There was an article in Real Simple magazine several years ago about happiness. I found it so interesting in many ways and valid for this time of year as I have also read at one time or another that the holidays are when people get the most depressed. The gist of it all was that studies have shown that most people tend to wake up feeling low and as the day goes on their spirits rise – maybe that's why they call it Happy Hour?

And culturally, Latin America gets the happy award – notably Puerto Rico, Mexico, Columbia – along with affluent countries like Denmark, Ireland, Iceland, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Canada being at the top of the list. At the time of the survey, the US came in 15th. The point of me telling you all of this is to give you some simple suggestions for elevating your happiness for the new year: Exercise, Socialize and Gratify.

I think the first two are self-explanatory but I really like the idea of keeping a small happy-book and writing down a few things each day that you are grateful for and keeping tabs on whom you have to thank for such small acts of kindness.
